The Greatest Hits Tour (also known as The Farewell Tour) was the twelfth and final concert tour by the iconic Irish boy band, Westlife. Spanning Europe and Asia, this tour supported their compilation album, Greatest Hits. Following the conclusion of the tour, the band disbanded after a remarkable 14-year journey, only to reunite in 2018.
The final show, on 23 June 2012, was broadcast live via satellite from Croke Park, Dublin to cinemas across Europe, Ireland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Estonia, Indonesia, and Denmark. Delayed screenings were also held in cinemas in Indonesia, Australia, and South Africa in July and August 2012. Additionally, an encore presentation was shown in select cinemas across the UK on 26 June 2012. The tour ranked as the 34th top-grossing tour act of the year and 12th in the midyear list, with earnings of $35.2 million (€27 million). The farewell tour featured 8 dates in China and 33 in the UK and Ireland, culminating in two spectacular nights at Croke Park in June. In total, the band sold 489,694 tickets, averaging $71.85 (€55) each. The final nights at Croke Park were officially recognized as the 11th largest attendance at an outdoor stadium worldwide.
A DVD of the tour was released in 2012, reaching number 1 on the UK and Irish charts and maintaining its position for 30 weeks. In 2014, BBC produced a live album from this tour titled "The Farewell Tour: Live in Croke Park."
Background: In October 2011, Westlife announced plans to release a compilation album that would encompass their entire career. Many media outlets speculated about a tour to accompany the album. On 18 October 2011, just a week after concluding their previous tour in Southeast Asia, the band officially announced the tour. The statement on their website reported that they would perform all 14 of their number-one hits along with other fan favorites. Following the tour announcement, rumors circulated that the band would break up after its completion. On 20 October 2011, the members officially announced their disbandment.
